Excellent analysis. Would like to see your take on the "last gasp of normal Democrats".

I tend to agree with most of what you wrote, except for your analysis of DeSantis: "Ron DeSantis is running as a populist. He embraces the policy alterations of a Trump-infused party, but he is a rational and sane person whose victory would show that the GOP is a rational and sane party. " he is a Trump clone, except maybe a bit smarter, which makes him really dangerous. I doubt that most Never Trumpers would see him as "rational and sane."

Thank you for a very thoughtful analysis of where the Republican Party finds itself right now with respect to Donald Trump. And as an aside, having watched your father for many many years, I 'm glad you have followed in his footsteps. You two should have a podcast. :)

I do believe we have seen the demise of the Republican Party and it comes from weakness and fear of losing. Without gerrymandering and media like Fox News (they were found liable for 3/4 of a billion dollars for lies and slander and are still awaiting other law suits) the Republican Party would be a more reasonable party. The dismantling of public institutions, with charter schools was the first crack in our institutional norms. Bush couldn’t privatize social security so they went for the lower hanging fruit. Children and teachers. Gun violence, dismantling and demeaning the social safety nets along with climate change can all be traced back to Republican policy. Trump took that and ran with it. Trump is like Godzilla he will destroy everything in his path including our republic. Women's rights and health care have been jeopardized, Immigration, finally has much to do with our climate crisis. People are moving north to save themselves from drought and gangs that use US made firearms.

So you don't like Trump. Your post here unfortunately is based upon emotions and fear mongering. While you are quick to point out all the possible disasters that await us with a second Trump term in the White House you are ignoring the sins of the current administration and it's departure from the rule of law and constitutional norms. The claimed fears of a second term for Trump don't add up that nothing like what is being claimed happened in his first term but are actually happening under Biden. If forced to choose between Biden and Trump i'll vote for Trump in a heartbeat.

Thank you for reading and commenting. I respect your point of view, and I definitely can see how people look at the Biden admin and arrive at this conclusion. That's why I hope Haley or DeSantis can win the primary.

I too hope for DeSantiis or Haley to win out. Either would do a better job governing than Trump in my opinion. But any of these three would be better than what is being offered up by the Democrats. Their continued push for authoritative command economy and erasure of the classical liberal ideas of the enlightenment frighten me more than a second Trump term.
